So Lionsgate wants an Oscar nomination for 3:10 To Yuma in the Best Original Score category, and I gotta say Marco Beltrami’s composition is absolutely deserving (and I’m certainly not allowing my obsession with Christian Bale to affect my opinion in this matter at all).
The studio has posted this promotional movie featuring Beltrami and director James Mangold (Walk The Line), with fascinating bits on how some of the unconventional textures, sounds and instruments were created for this incredible soundtrack :
In the video he gives away a few personal secrets for some of the diverse sonic elements from his Yuma score, including using the pedal action on a pump organ as a rhythmic base for the project, and some really killer treated piano (prominently heard in the opening sequence of the film).
Beltrami has had a few scores in high-profile horror and action movies in recent years (I Robot, Hellboy, Blade 2, and Resident Evil which he composed with Marilyn Manson), and he’s the composer following the late Michael Kamen on the latest chapter of the Die Hard franchise, Live Free Or Die Hard, but the emotional and nuanced music in 3:10 To Yuma brought a new appreciation for his talent. It’s great to hear he’s been given an opportunity to craft more subtle soundscapes and emotional atmospheres.
Good luck to Marco Beltrami at the 80th annual Oscars, and thanks to Filmsound Daily for the tip (who also point us to a better resolution version of the video at the Lionsgate site).
